Defending champions Lions and BPB Westroc met on Sunday October 1st to
determine the 2006 Oakville Men's Soccer Club championship. The match
was a close contest between two very skilled teams which finished in
2nd place in the East and West divisions during the regular season.
After 80 minutes of scoreless back and forth action, BPB Westroc finaly
broke the stalemate with a goal from the 18 yard line. This seemed to
be enough to clinch the championship at this late stage of the game
until a determined Lions came roaring back. Lions pressed the leaders
which resulted in an equalizing goal a few minutes later. The teams
exchanged chances that could have won the game for each of them.
Regulation time ended in a 1 - 1 draw.
The match resumed with the same intensity which saw BPB Westroc gaining
a physical edge in the extra time. BPB Westroc scored a second goal and
Lions were desperate to equalize again. They pressed again with a
frenetic energy as time mercilessly ticked away. Lions were focused on
attacking tactics which left them vulnerable in their end of the field.
BPB Westroc were able to fend them off until they took advantage of a
counter attack which netted them the game clinching goal. As the
referee whistled the end of the extra time and the match, BPB Westroc
held on to a 3-1 scoreline to take the title from the defending
champions Lions. The 2006 season closed with BPB Westroc capturing
their first title as Oakville Men's Soccer Club Champions.
